Stoma Care- Principles & Practice is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the essential skills and knowledge required to provide high-quality care to patients with a variety of stomas. This comprehensive 4-hour course covers the fundamentals of stoma types, including colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies, and offers practical guidance on assessing stoma sites, managing pouching systems, and addressing common complications such as leakage, prolapse, and skin irritation.
Participants will learn best practices for stoma care, as well as effective strategies for patient education and emotional support. With an emphasis on both physical and psychosocial aspects of stoma management, this course will enable healthcare providers to confidently support their patients and improve their overall quality of life.

On Completion learners will:

Describe the anatomy and physiology relevant to stoma formation and function

Identify different types of stomas (colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy) and their indications

Explain the principles of stoma care, including hygiene, skin protection, and prevention of complications

Select and apply appropriate stoma appliances and accessories based on patient needs

Demonstrate safe and effective stoma pouch application, emptying, and changing techniques

Assess stoma appearance and output, recognising signs of complications such as infection, skin irritation, retraction, or prolapse

Provide education and support to patients and caregivers on stoma management, including diet, lifestyle, and psychosocial considerations
