Faculty Development Programme
This two-day Faculty Development Programme prepares educators to design, deliver, and evaluate effective simulation-based and clinical education using sound educational methodology. Grounded in adult learning theory and experiential education, the programme explores simulation alongside complementary teaching modalities such as skills training, case-based learning, and workplace education. Participants will develop practical skills in scenario design, facilitation, debriefing, feedback, and assessment, while also considering faculty roles, quality assurance, and governance for both local simulation activities and large-scale courses.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
Knowledge & Understanding
-
Describe core educational theories relevant to simulation and clinical education, including adult learning theory, experiential learning, and reflective practice.
-
Explain the strengths and limitations of different educational modalities used in clinical education, including simulation, skills training, case-based discussion, and workplace learning.
Application & Analysis
-
Apply educational theory to the design of simulation-based and clinical teaching sessions aligned with clearly defined learning objectives.
-
Analyse learning needs and contextual factors to select appropriate simulation fidelity, modality, and instructional strategies.
-
Construct simulation scenarios that incorporate learning objectives, cues, expected actions, and outcome measures appropriate to learner level.
Teaching, Facilitation & Debriefing
-
Demonstrate effective facilitation of simulation-based learning, including briefing, scenario management, and learner engagement.
-
Apply structured debriefing and feedback models to support reflection, insight, and behavioural change.
-
Evaluate learner performance and engagement while maintaining psychological safety and educational integrity.
Assessment & Evaluation
-
Differentiate between formative and summative assessment within simulation and clinical education.
-
Apply basic principles of assessment design and programme evaluation to simulation-based activities and courses.
Professional Practice & Programme Development
-
Reflect on personal teaching practice to identify strengths, limitations, and areas for professional development as a simulation educator.
-
Contribute to the development, delivery, and quality assurance of simulation programmes, including participation as faculty in large, standardised courses (e.g. ETC).
