Surgical Wound Closure (Suturing)  - Principles & Practice

This one day course is designed to teach clinical staff how to effectively assess and manage acute wounds with suture closure. The day is divided into theory and practice, giving you the opportunity to safely practice in a supportive and friendly environment

Included within the theory:

  • Basic anatomy and physiology,

  • Wound assessment

  • Stages of wound healing

  • Types of analgesia & Lidocaine techniques

  • Documentation & consent

  • Suture materials & techniques

This workshop gives staff the theoretical and  practical knowledge required to undertake this skill, however learners are required to obtain sign off in their own clinical area through observed practice before they can perform this skill independently.  A log book of practice will be provided as part of this programme.

On Completion learners will:

  • Describe the principles of wound assessment, including wound type, depth, contamination, and suitability for suturing

  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant anatomy and skin healing principles related to wound closure

  • Identify indications and contraindications for suturing in minor wounds

  • Select appropriate suturing materials, needles, and instruments for different wound types

  • Apply principles of aseptic technique and infection prevention during wound management

  • Administer local anaesthesia safely and effectively where appropriate

  • Demonstrate correct handling of instruments and safe sharps practice

  • Perform common suturing techniques, including:

  • Simple interrupted sutures

  • Continuous sutures

  • Mattress sutures (horizontal and vertical)

  • Manage simple lacerations competently using appropriate closure techniques

  • Provide appropriate post-procedure wound care advice, including aftercare, suture removal timing, and documentation

  • Recognise complications of suturing, such as infection, wound dehiscence, and scarring, and identify when escalation or referral is required
