Minor Injuries - Assessment & Management

The Minor Injuries Assessment and Management course is a two-day, practical programme designed for frontline hospital and pre-hospital clinicians, including nurses, paramedics, emergency care practitioners, and allied health professionals. The course equips participants with the knowledge, clinical reasoning, and hands-on skills required to competently and efficiently assess and manage patients presenting with a wide range of minor injury conditions. Emphasis is placed on building confidence and consistency in assessment across diverse clinical environments, supported by extensive practical skills training.

On completion of the course the student will have increased confidence and  practical skills to assess patients with a variety of presenting complaints within minor injury conditions including; joint examinations, neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, back and hip examination, knee, lower leg and ankle/foot.

Practical skills include: Bandaging, Slings, suturing, Plastering and splinting are all included as assessed components of this programme.

On Completion learners will:

  • Conduct safe, structured assessments of patients presenting with minor injuries in hospital and pre-hospital settings

  • Demonstrate effective clinical decision-making when managing minor injury presentations

  • Perform focused musculoskeletal examinations of:

  • Neck and spine

  • Shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand

  • Back and hip

  • Knee, lower leg, ankle, and foot

  • Identify red flags and conditions requiring escalation, referral, or further investigation

  • Apply appropriate management plans for common minor injury presentations

  • Demonstrate safe and effective use of practical skills, including:

  • Bandaging techniques for soft tissue and joint injuries

  • Application of slings and splints

  • Basic wound management and suturing

  • Plastering and immobilisation techniques

  • Integrate examination findings and practical interventions into patient-centred care plans

  • Improve confidence and competence in managing minor injuries independently within scope of practice
