Certificate in Principles of Medication Handling and Administration for Care Settings (RQF) - Level 2

This Level 2 Certificate is part of our portfolio of funded Highfield qualifications. Highfield is registered by OfQual to award recognised qualifications under the Regulated Qualification Framework, so care settings can be absolutely confident that this qualification is genuine and will be accepted by the relevant regulatory bodies and across the Health and Social Care sector and beyond. However, you don’t have to take our word for it – the Government also back this course, with funding available under the Skills for Care programme – so employers will be able to claim back the cost of this course upon successful completion.

This is a knowledge-only qualification that provides underpinning knowledge and understanding in relation to medication types and processes, principles of handling medication and principles of administering medication.

Please note - this is a knowledge only based qualification – completing it does not qualify the learner to dispense medication.

This qualification is designed for

  • Adult care worker

  • Healthcare assistant/support worker

  • Personal assistant

  • Health care worker just beginning their career in the health and social care sector

The duration of the qualification depends on whether you have had prior learning or prior achievements, as this may reduce the time spent preparing for the assessment. However, the total time for this qualification is 145 hours. 120 of these hours are recommended as guided learning hours. This equates to approximately a one month timescale but is dependent on a learner being engaged in their studies, submitting evidence to match the learning criteria usually on a weekly basis.

  • Understand key legislation, policies and professional responsibilities relating to medication in care settings.

  • Apply safe procedures for the ordering, storage, handling and disposal of medication.

  • Recognise common types of medication and the main routes of administration.

  • Follow the principles of safe medication administration and accurate record keeping.

  • Identify and respond appropriately to side effects, adverse reactions and medication errors.
